QUALITIES OF MOVEMENT

A one-of a kind workshop with the Sahitya Akademi award winning writer, director and playwright, Mr. Mahesh Dattani.

Qualities of Movement:  Movement is an expression of energy. In the art of theatre, physical movement is always a result of a strong intention. An intention that leads to action is a fundamental principle of acting. It moves energy in a meaningful way, telling a story that evokes a response from an audience, very often an emotional one. There are various techniques employed in the theatre to explore the qualities of movement. The quality of movement is directly connected with the actor’s endeavour to create a character, telling a story through powerful actions and gestures. In this workshop, we will explore these qualities of movement using the six spatial directions as formulated by Michael Chekhov.

Mr. Mahesh Dattani is a renowned playwright, stage director, screenwriter and filmmaker, based in India. His published works include Final Solutions and Other Plays, Tara, A Collected Works in two volumes published by Penguin India, Brief Candle and Other Plays and most recently Me and My Plays also published by Penguin. In 1998, Mahesh Dattani won the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his book Final Solutions and Other Plays, the highest award for literary work in India. Mr Dattani is the first playwright, writing in English, to receive this award. Most notably, his play, Dance Like a Man, has completed 550 performances and continues to tour to date. He has written and directed films like Mango Soufflé and Morning Raga, which have received international acclaim. Most recently, he has directed his play, 30 Days in September, for Zee Theatre Productions.

Mr. Dattani is also a workshop facilitator and faculty for several writing and acting courses. The workshops he conducts are relevant globally and he is invited in many parts of the world to lead their students. He has recently conducted workshops at Portland State University in Oregon, USA and has collaborated with international theatre companies like Border Crossings, most recently at Shanghai with Chinese, Swedish and English actors. He also writes scripts for BBC Radio 4.
